Our valued patient Bryan Naylor was happy to talk about his career as a serviceman. It was in 1954 that he first went to sea as an officer apprentice in the Merchant navy. Whilst serving his apprenticeship he met and later married his lovely Moira. In 1960 Bryan began a new career in the Royal Navy, where he earned his wings as an Observer in the Fleet Air Arm. Initially flying in helicopters, he was later appointed to operations duties and went on into joint service appointments with the army Intelligence Corps. He continued in these duties whilst serving in the Royal Naval Reserve until the turn of the century.

Between periods of recall to active service, Bryan also worked in the BBC External Broadcasting Service where he was part of a less well known part of the Corporation broadcasting in several languages to Africa and the Far East.

In retirement from service, Bryan set up and ran a successful financial advice company serving both private and corporate clients at a time of great change as the country developed and then left the EU. In early 2010 Bryan developed AMD, a condition which leads to the loss of central vision. He sold the company and devoted his time to voluntary work for older and visually impaired charities a commitment he continues to this day .

Bryan lost his beloved Moira in 2023 after 64 years of happy marriage, he has two adult children, on the verge of retirement and three adult grandsons. In his spare time, he is an aspiring visually impaired watercolour artist.
